What Is Pressable? The Company, Its Plans, and Who It’s For

Pressable is a managed WordPress hosting company owned by Automattic, the business behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce. It hosts WordPress sites only, runs them on Automattic’s WP Cloud infrastructure, and sells plans priced by the number of WordPress installs, starting at $250 a year. Its main customers are agencies, WooCommerce stores, and businesses that want WordPress without managing servers.

Last updated October 1, 2026. Prices and plan details are from Pressable’s pricing page as of this date.

Pressable in one minute

  • What it is: a managed host for WordPress sites only. You can’t run a Node app or a non-WordPress PHP site on it.
  • Who owns it: Automattic, since 2016. (Full story in Who Owns Pressable?)
  • Founded: 2010 as ZippyKid, renamed Pressable in 2013.
  • Platform: WP Cloud, the same Automattic infrastructure behind WordPress.com.
  • Starting price: $250 per year for one WordPress install, 30,000 monthly visits, and 20GB storage.
  • Guarantee: 30-day money-back.

What “managed WordPress hosting” means here

With regular shared hosting, you get server space and you are on your own for updates, caching, backups, and security. With managed WordPress hosting, the host takes over most of that. At Pressable, that covers:

  • Backups: hourly database snapshots plus daily full backups.
  • Caching and CDN: page cache, object and query cache, OPcache, and an edge cache with a global CDN, all built in.
  • Security: Jetpack Security included on every plan, plus malware monitoring.
  • Updates: automatic WordPress core updates and a scheduler for plugin updates.
  • Environments: a staging site and a sandbox site for every production install.
  • Support: 24/7 support from WordPress specialists.
  • Migrations: free, unlimited site migrations.

You still get a normal WordPress install. You can use any plugin or theme, connect over SSH or SFTP, run WP-CLI, and deploy from GitHub.

Pressable plans and pricing (2026)

Pressable’s Signature plans are priced by WordPress installs and monthly visits. Yearly billing gets you two months free. A few representative tiers:

PlanYearly priceWordPress installsMonthly visitsStorage
Signature 1$250130K20GB
Signature 2$450350K30GB
Signature 3$600575K35GB
Signature 5$1,55020400K80GB
Signature 8$6,7501002M325GB

Going over your plan costs $1.20 per 1,000 extra visits and $1 per extra GB of storage. Premium plans for high-traffic, mission-critical sites start at $350 per month and add more CPU, a 100% uptime guarantee, and white-glove onboarding.

Who Pressable is a good fit for

  • Agencies managing many client sites. Per-install pricing, collaborator permissions, site cloning templates, and white-label options are aimed squarely at you.
  • WooCommerce stores. Automattic owns both Pressable and WooCommerce, and the dedicated PHP workers per site help with checkout traffic.
  • Developers who want SSH, WP-CLI, Git deploys, and an API without running their own servers.
  • Businesses outgrowing cheap shared hosting that want backups and security handled for them.

Who should look elsewhere

  • People who are not using WordPress. Pressable hosts WordPress only.
  • Hobby sites on a tight budget. At about $21 a month billed yearly, the entry plan costs more than basic shared hosting.
  • Anyone who wants a drag-and-drop builder with hosting bundled. WordPress.com, also an Automattic product, is the simpler choice there.

What “a pressable company” means outside of hosting

If you searched “pressable company” and expected a business term, there isn’t really one. “Pressable” is a regular adjective meaning something that can be pressed, like a button. Nearly every search for “Pressable company” is about the hosting business. For the word itself, see What Does “Pressable” Mean?

Frequently asked questions

What does Pressable do?

Pressable hosts WordPress websites and handles the server work for you, including backups, caching, security, updates, staging sites, and 24/7 support.

How much does Pressable cost?

As of October 2026, plans start at $250 per year (about $20.83 a month) for one WordPress install and 30,000 monthly visits. The largest Signature plan is $6,750 per year for 100 installs.

Is Pressable owned by Automattic?

Yes. Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com and WooCommerce, has owned Pressable since 2016.

Is Pressable good for WooCommerce?

It is one of the stronger options. Automattic owns WooCommerce too, and every plan includes dedicated PHP workers per site, which matters for uncached pages like cart and checkout.

Synonyms for “Pressable” (and Alternatives to Pressable Hosting)

The best synonyms for “pressable” are clickable, tappable, pushable, and depressible. In interface design, “tappable” is the closest match on touchscreens and “clickable” on desktop. If you actually meant Pressable the WordPress host and want alternatives to it, the usual comparisons are WP Engine, Kinsta, WordPress.com, and SiteGround.

Last updated October 1, 2026.

Synonyms for “pressable” by context

“Pressable” means able to be pressed (more on that in What Does “Pressable” Mean?). The right swap depends on what is being pressed.

SynonymBest used forExample
ClickableDesktop UI, links, buttonsA clickable banner
TappableTouchscreens and mobile appsTappable list rows
PushablePhysical buttons, plain speechA pushable door plate
DepressibleKeys, pedals, switches (technical)A depressible plunger
ActuatableEngineering and hardware specsAn actuatable valve
InteractiveAny element that responds to inputInteractive controls
CompressibleMaterials that squash under pressureCompressible foam

Two cautions. “Compressible” is about squashing something smaller, not triggering it, so don’t use it for buttons. And “responsive” gets suggested a lot, but in web design it means a layout that adapts to screen size, which will confuse developers.

“Pressable” in React Native and UX writing

If you are writing docs or UI copy, note that Pressable is also the name of a React Native component that handles touch input. Inside a React Native codebase, “pressable” usually refers to that component, so “tappable” is the clearer word when you just mean “the user can tap this.”

Alternatives to Pressable hosting

Pressable the brand has no synonym, but it does have competitors. Here is how the common alternatives line up:

HostTypeOwnerGood fit for
PressableManaged WordPressAutomatticAgencies, WooCommerce stores
WordPress.comHosted WordPress platformAutomatticSimpler sites, less maintenance
WP EngineManaged WordPressSilver Lake (private equity)Larger businesses, enterprise
FlywheelManaged WordPressWP EngineDesigners and small agencies
KinstaManaged WordPressIndependentDevelopers who want a polished dashboard
SiteGroundShared and WordPress hostingIndependentBudget-conscious small sites

Ownership matters more than it used to. Pressable and WordPress.com share a parent and the same WP Cloud infrastructure, while Flywheel is part of WP Engine, so “switching hosts” between those pairs doesn’t change who is ultimately behind your hosting. Details in Who Owns Pressable?

Frequently asked questions

What is a synonym for pressable?

Clickable, tappable, pushable, and depressible are the most common. Pick tappable for touchscreens, clickable for desktop interfaces, and depressible for physical keys or switches.

What is the opposite of pressable?

Unpressable, or in UI terms, non-interactive or disabled. A disabled button is the everyday example.

What does pressable mean in UX design?

It describes an element that responds when a user presses or taps it, such as a button, card, or switch. It is often used interchangeably with tappable.

What are the alternatives to Pressable hosting?

The main alternatives are WP Engine, Kinsta, Flywheel, SiteGround, and WordPress.com. WordPress.com is also owned by Automattic, and Flywheel is owned by WP Engine.

Who Owns Pressable? Automattic, Since 2016

Pressable is owned by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Tumblr. Automattic bought a majority stake in Pressable in early 2016, after leading its funding round in 2015. Pressable still runs as its own brand, and its hosting runs on WP Cloud, the same Automattic infrastructure that powers WordPress.com.

How Automattic ended up owning Pressable

Pressable started life in 2010 as ZippyKid, one of the first hosts to sell managed hosting built only for WordPress. It took the Pressable name in 2013.

Automattic was an investor before it was an owner. It was the main backer of a $1.5 million round in April 2015. In early 2016 it bought the common shares held by CEO Vid Luther, which gave Automattic majority ownership. Post Status reported at the time that Pressable had roughly 10 employees and under $2 million in annual revenue, and that it had come close to selling to WP Engine a couple of years earlier. An Automattic employee, Chris Lauzon, stepped in as interim CEO after the deal.

You will see both 2015 and 2016 cited as the acquisition year around the web. The 2015 date is the investment; the 2016 date is when Automattic took control.

Who is Automattic?

Automattic was founded in 2005 by Matt Mullenweg, who co-created the open source WordPress software. It is a privately held, fully distributed company and was valued at $7.5 billion in its 2022 funding round. Its portfolio includes:

  • WordPress.com: hosted website and blogging platform
  • WooCommerce: the ecommerce plugin for WordPress
  • Jetpack: security, backup, and performance plugin
  • Akismet: spam filtering for comments and forms
  • Tumblr: the social blogging network
  • WP Cloud: the hosting infrastructure behind WordPress.com and Pressable, also sold to other hosts
  • Pressable: managed WordPress hosting

One point that trips people up: Automattic does not own WordPress itself. WordPress is open source software, and the WordPress trademark is held by the nonprofit WordPress Foundation.

What Automattic ownership means if you host on Pressable

Ownership is not just trivia when you are picking a host. Here is what it changes in practice, based on Pressable’s current plans:

  • Shared infrastructure with WordPress.com. Pressable runs on WP Cloud, so the platform is built and maintained by the same company that runs one of the largest WordPress installations anywhere.
  • Jetpack Security is included. Every Signature plan includes it, which Pressable values at $239 a year.
  • WooCommerce familiarity. Automattic also owns WooCommerce, which is a big reason Pressable markets itself heavily to store owners.
  • A parent that is not going anywhere soon. Automattic has been around since 2005. That does not guarantee a product lives forever, but it is a different risk profile than a small independent host.
  • Early access to Automattic experiments. Pressable describes itself as an Automattic “hosting lab.” New features like its MCP server for AI tools have shown up here first.

The tradeoff is concentration. If you have concerns about how much of the WordPress ecosystem one company controls, especially after Automattic’s public legal fight with WP Engine that started in 2024, hosting with an Automattic brand puts more of your stack in one place. For most sites that won’t matter. For some people it will.

Is Pressable the same as WordPress.com?

No. Same parent, same underlying infrastructure, different products. WordPress.com bundles hosting with a managed site builder and a lot of guardrails. Pressable gives you a standard WordPress install with full plugin and theme freedom, plus developer tools like SSH, WP-CLI, staging, and sandbox sites, and it is priced per WordPress install. If you are weighing Automattic’s own store hosting against running WooCommerce yourself, I compared those options in WordPress.com Commerce vs. DIY WooCommerce Hosting.

Frequently asked questions

Who owns Pressable?

Automattic, the company founded by WordPress co-creator Matt Mullenweg that also runs WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Tumblr.

When did Automattic acquire Pressable?

Automattic took majority ownership in early 2016 by buying founder Vid Luther’s shares. It had already invested in the company in 2015.

Who founded Pressable?

Vid Luther founded the company in 2010 under the name ZippyKid. It was renamed Pressable in 2013.

Is Pressable owned by WordPress?

Not exactly. WordPress is open source software that nobody owns. Pressable is owned by Automattic, a private company closely tied to WordPress through its founder and its products.

Does WP Engine own Pressable?

No. WP Engine is a separate company backed by the private equity firm Silver Lake, and it competes directly with Pressable. WP Engine reportedly came close to buying Pressable a couple of years before Automattic did, but that deal never closed.

What Does “Pressable” Mean? The Word and the WordPress Host

“Pressable” means able to be pressed, like a button or a key. It is a plain English adjective built from the verb “press” and the suffix “-able.” As a proper noun, Pressable is a managed WordPress hosting company owned by Automattic, and the name reads as “Press” (from WordPress) plus “-able.”

Last updated October 1, 2026.

Pressable as a word

pressable (adjective): capable of being pressed.

The “-able” suffix turns a verb into “can be [verb]ed,” the same pattern as readable, washable, or clickable. So a pressable button is one you can push, and pressable fabric is fabric you can iron flat.

You will run into it most in two places:

  • Interface design and code. React Native has a core component literally called Pressable that detects taps, long presses, and other touch interactions. Designers also use “pressable” to describe any element that should look and act tappable.
  • Everyday description. Pressable flowers, pressable dough, a pressable keypad. Anything that responds to pressure.

Is it a real word? Yes. It is not common enough to appear in every dictionary, but it is a regular, correctly formed English word and means exactly what it looks like. Looking for alternatives? See synonyms for “pressable”.

Pressable as a company name

Capitalized, Pressable usually refers to the WordPress hosting company. A quick profile:

  • Business: managed hosting for WordPress sites
  • Owner: Automattic (WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack), since 2016
  • History: founded in 2010 as ZippyKid, renamed Pressable in 2013
  • Infrastructure: Automattic’s WP Cloud, the same platform behind WordPress.com

For plans, pricing, and who it suits, see What Is Pressable? For the acquisition story, see Who Owns Pressable?

Why the name works for a WordPress host

The company hasn’t published an official origin story for the rename, so this is my read rather than a quote from them. The name does two jobs at once:

  • “Press” points straight at WordPress. “Press” is already a family name in the WordPress world: WordPress, BuddyPress, bbPress.
  • “-able” suggests capability. A site that is Pressable is able to run WordPress well.

It is also a big step up from “ZippyKid,” which told you nothing about WordPress. After the 2013 rename, anyone seeing the name could guess what the company did.

Frequently asked questions

What does the word “pressable” mean?

It means able to be pressed. A pressable button, key, or surface responds when you push on it.

Is “pressable” a real word?

Yes. It is a standard English adjective formed from “press” plus “-able,” even though it is less common than words like “clickable.”

What is Pressable in React Native?

Pressable is a React Native core component that wraps other elements and detects press interactions such as taps and long presses. It is the recommended replacement for older touchable components.

What is Pressable the company?

Pressable is a managed WordPress hosting company owned by Automattic. It was founded in 2010 as ZippyKid and took the Pressable name in 2013.

Pressable Redirects

While we’re a big fan of the Redirection plugin, sometimes you need or prefer something on the “hosting level” rather than using a WordPress plugin.

Pressable does not have a redirect management tool, but they do have a documented process for setting up redirects. The process involves creating and editing a PHP file (custom-redirects.php), which you then upload to the web server.
