I have hosted client sites for years through my own web development shop, and the host that looks best on a pricing page is not always the one that saves the most time. For agencies the questions are different: how many sites can I manage from one place, can I hand a site to a client cleanly, and who answers at 2 a.m.? Here is how I size up WP Engine, Pressable, and WordPress.com for that job.
What agencies need from a host
- One dashboard for many sites, with per-site access for teammates and clients.
- Free staging that does not eat into your site count.
- Bulk tools for updates, PHP changes, and plugin installs.
- Clean handoff, so a site can move to the client’s own account.
- Backups and restores you can run yourself.
- Support that knows WordPress, not just Linux.
How the three compare
| WP Engine | Pressable | WordPress.com | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Larger agencies and high-traffic clients | Small and mid-size agencies with many sites | Freelancers with simple client sites |
| Staging | Staging and development per site | Free staging sites that do not count against the plan | On higher plans |
| Team access | User Portal roles | Collaborators with per-site permissions | Per-site users |
| Bulk tools | Smart Plugin Manager (add-on) | Bulk Operations for PHP, plugins, commands | Limited |
| Site transfer | Transferable sites to client accounts | Transfer sites between accounts | Site transfer between users |
| Backups | Daily, 30 days | Hourly database, daily files, 30+ days | Included on paid plans |
WP Engine for agencies
WP Engine has the most mature agency program of the three and the deepest tooling: multiple environments per site, transferable sites, Smart Plugin Manager, and Local for development. It is the pick for clients with heavy traffic or WooCommerce stores. The trade-off is price, which I break down in WP Engine Pricing in 2026.
Pressable for agencies
Pressable is the host I recommend most to small shops. You pay per site and traffic tier, staging is free, Jetpack Security comes with every site, and the collaborator system makes it easy to give a client or contractor access to one site without exposing the rest. Bulk Operations lets you run a PHP change or a WP-CLI command across many sites at once. See Pressable pricing for the tiers.
WordPress.com for freelancers
For a freelancer building simple sites that the client will own and pay for, WordPress.com is easy to hand off: the client holds the account and the bill, and you get added as a user. It is less flexible for custom builds, but there is almost no server for you to babysit. I compared it with Pressable in Pressable vs WordPress.com Business.
How I would choose
- Many small to mid-size client sites: Pressable.
- High-traffic, enterprise, or complex WooCommerce clients: WP Engine.
- Simple sites the client will own and pay for: WordPress.com.
Plenty of agencies use two of these. I keep the bulk of client sites on one host and put the outliers where they fit best.
Hosting a lot of client sites? Pressable gives you free staging, Jetpack Security on every site, per-site collaborators, and bulk tools.
FAQ
What is the best managed WordPress host for agencies?
For most small and mid-size agencies, Pressable offers the best mix of price, free staging, and per-site collaborator access. WP Engine is the stronger pick for high-traffic or enterprise clients.
Can I transfer a client site to their own hosting account?
Yes. WP Engine has transferable sites, Pressable can move sites between accounts, and WordPress.com supports site transfers between users.
Do staging sites count against my plan?
On Pressable, no. Staging sites are free and do not count against your site limit. WP Engine includes staging and development environments with each site.
