Migration to Pressable

Migrating or moving a website used to be a painful, and time intensive process. It often involved downtime, weeks of planning and multiple team members.

Thankfully for WordPress website owners those days are long gone. With the advent of migration plugins and migration services, moving a WordPress website can be done in a matter of minutes not days.

Moving to Pressable

We recently established a new account with Pressable for the purpose of transferring one of our existing websites. We have plans to move many more, and wanted to document and time the process.

Pressable has a helpful document on migrating, which outlines the steps and tools available.

Pressable has both assisted (where they do the work for you) and unassisted (using a plugin) migration options.

Migration Process (unassisted)

  1. Sign up at Pressable.
  2. Create new (blank) site at Pressable.
  3. Disconnect live/existing site from Jetpack
  4. Navigate to Migrate Site in the My Pressable Dashboard.
  5. Download the migration plugin and install on the live site.
  6. Enter your email (for notifications) and the Pressable (SFTP) connection details into the migration plugin settings.
  7. Clear the Pressable server cache and any other theme or plugin caches.
  8. Add the domain at Pressable in the dashboard.
  9. Point the domain DNS records to Pressable.

You can also “Request an assisted migration from Pressable’s Customer Success Team.” I’m assuming that involves the same basic steps, just a lot more hand holding which makes sense for non-tech business owners.

Migration Time

Overall the migration process for this simple (under 10 plugins) and small WordPress website was less than 20 minutes. This is impressive, and only made possible with the Pressable toolset and having easy access to the DNS records.

Pressable vs WP Engine

Recent contentiousness aside, I figured it would be helpful to compare Pressable and WP Engine, to hopefully determine which is the superior managed WordPress hosting provider.

Differences between Pressable and WP Engine

Rather then list how Pressable and WP Engine are alike, it would be easier to focus on how they are NOT alike.

With the price for 1 website being almost identical, the deciding factor for most will be the differences in features, limits and support.

A list of what I see are the major differences between Pressable and WP Engine:

  1. Pressable is owned by Automattic. WP Engine is an independent company, not affiliated with Automattic or the WordPress organization.
  2. Pressable offers 20 GB of storage. WP Engine offers 10 GB.
  3. Pressable gives you 30K visits per month. WP Engine gives 25K.
  4. Pressable does not appear to meter bandwidth. WP Engine provides 75 GB per month.
  5. Pressable backups are hourly and daily. WP Engine backups are daily.
  6. Pressable includes 1 staging site. WP Engine includes 1 staging, and 1 development site.
  7. Pressable’s Service Level Agreement is 100%. WP Engine’s SLA is 99.99%.
  8. Pressable offers email service through a third party. WP Engine does not offer email.
  9. Pressable comes with Jetpack Security. WP Engine provides security services, but no specific plugin or directly comparable services.
  10. Pressable offers a 30 day money back gurantee. WP Engine gives you 60 days.

Overall a lot of wins for Pressable and a few wins for WP Engine.

Forget features, it’s about support

When evaluating a web hosting provider, technical differences rarely matter. It’s the quality of support, and investment in the platform that will determine your satisfaction with a web host. Good web hosts prioritize support, while alo making investments in their technology to create growth and sustainability.

Pressable Email

Most managed WordPress web hosts do not offer email service, but Pressable email bucks that trend with a professional email service from Titan.

Wait…who is Titan?

Technically not a truly native email service, Pressable email is offered through an independent company called Titan. Automattic, the company behind WordPress and Pressable is an investor in Titan, and I suspect one of the larger (maybe only) investors.

The nice thing about this “close relationship” is you can expect the two services to work seamlessly. The drawback is of course the risk of having your email service with a provider that isn’t named Microsoft or Google. While I’m not huge fan of either of these email heavyweights, there are safety and long term viability concerns with a smaller provider like Titan.

But I digress, branded email (using your domain) means you are free to choose your favorite and if they don’t meet your expectations, you can switch providers and your email address remains the same.

Pressable Email Features

  • 10 GB of storage.
  • 10 aliases.
  • Unlimited filters.
  • Branded email service using your domain name.
  • Spam filtering, anti-virus scanning and encryption.
  • Calendar and contacts.
  • Mobile app, IMAP, and webmail access.
  • 24/7 support via live chat *gasp*
  • A “rich” email composer aka the usual templates, and styling options.
  • Remindes and “undo” send.

Pressable Email Pricing

Pricing for Pressable email is $3.50 per user, per month. That’s half the price of comparable email service from Google and Microsoft. Every customer gets a 90 day free trial.

Pressable Email Limits

I couldn’t find public pricing on adding storage (or features) but I did find the daily rate limits:

  • Outgoing Email Limit: 200 emails/user/hour, 500 emails/user/day
  • Incoming Rate Limit: 500 emails/user/hour

Note: Pressable states their email service is not suited for bulk email sending. Instead use a transactional email provider like SendGrid or MailChimp.

Pressable CDN

The Pressable CDN or content delivery network is available to all Pressable hosting customers. It’s as simple as flipping a switch, and Pressable will immediately begin to serve your content from the closest server or “point of presence” to the user.

Supported Pressable CDN Content Types

The Pressable CDN applies or supports the following content types or file formats. The CDN does not apply to pages or data from the database.

  • jpg, jpeg
  • gif
  • png
  • webp
  • css
  • bmp
  • js
  • woff2
  • ico

Pressable CDN Files Not Supported

PDF and SVG files.

Can I combine CDNs?

The short answer is: probably not. Pressable notes that it’s best to not overlap content delivery networks, including their own Edge Cache CDN and Jetpack CDN.

CDN Cache Control

You can clear, purge and flush the CDN cache at any time via the MyPressable Control Panel. The default cache-control header is 7 days, but that can be customized with the Pressable Cache Management plugin.
