Watsi is a nonprofit that crowdfunds medical care for specific people in low-income countries. You browse patient profiles, pick someone who needs a surgery or treatment, give as little as $5, and get an update once the care is done.
How it works
- Partner hospitals and clinics post patients who need funding.
- Donors fund individual patients directly.
- Watsi says 100 percent of donations go to care.
- You get a follow-up on how the treatment went.
- Monthly giving, gift cards and crypto donations are also options.
Background
Watsi was founded in 2011 and was the first nonprofit ever accepted into Y Combinator, back in 2013. It is a 501(c)(3) based in San Francisco with a small team, a GuideStar Platinum seal and a four-star Charity Navigator rating. The counter on the site shows more than 35,000 surgeries funded by over 32,000 donors.
Why I saved it: a direct, transparent way to give where you can see exactly who the money helps.
