Roc Camera

Roc Camera is a $299 Raspberry Pi based camera that attaches a zero-knowledge proof to every photo, so anyone can verify it is real and not AI generated.

Roc Camera is a real, physical camera built to prove its photos are real. With AI image generators getting this good, a photo on its own doesn’t prove much anymore. Roc’s answer is to attach proof to the picture at the moment it’s taken.

How it works

When you take a shot, the camera generates a zero-knowledge proof from the raw sensor data and the photo’s metadata. That proof travels with the image, and anyone can check it with Roc’s verification tools or SDK. If someone edits the photo or swaps it for an AI fake, the proof no longer matches.

The hardware

  • A Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB of RAM inside
  • A 16MP Sony IMX519 sensor with a wide 122 degree view
  • A 4 inch square touchscreen
  • A 4,000mAh battery

It sells for $299 and has been made in small batches. Batch 2 sold out, so you may have to sign up to be notified about the next one. It’s made by a small team called FAUST.

Who it’s for

Photojournalists, insurance and legal work, and anyone who needs to prove an image wasn’t faked. For everyday shots, your phone is still the better camera. Roc is about trust, not image quality.

Why I saved it: this is one of the more concrete answers I’ve seen to the question of how we’ll know what’s real once AI images are everywhere.
