I bought the iphone and I must take issue with some of your information. Basically the only 3 reasons you should have mentioned are battery life, size, and storage space (and maybe the camera, but really cameras will never be that important on phones). Everything else is correctable via software updates, coverage updates, or it is actually not even an issue.

First the keyboard/touchscreen interface. This is the most amazing touch screen interface I have ever used. People who say they are having problems with it must have enormous hands or some type of neurological disease.

Second the software issues. The touch screen interface allows for updates to the phone without buying a new one. there are 3 physical butttons on the phone, 1 that brings you to the main page, 1 that controls volume without going into settings, and one that turns the screen to sleep mode. Everything else is software.

Third the coverage and Internet speed. I will concede that it should be on multiple carriers and indeed it will eventually, but I don't care because I already had ATT/Cingular. The internet speed will get better and better and the phone also allows you to join wireless networks if they become available.

Finally, the hardware issues I mentioned above. The size is great, but if some kind of new flexible screen technology came out then that would merit an upgrade. The battery life is plenty as it is, but more is always welcome. The only thing that is most likely to be issue earlier is the memory capacity. 8gigs is plenty really, unless you plan on using the phone as your primary media storage device. Thats well over 1000 songs. But, since it has a camera and the ability to have movies and pod casts, I can see that memory may pose some minor inconveniences that could cause you to wait for version 4 or 5.

I must say though, I did not plan on buying the phone when I got to the apple store. But, there was no line and plenty of phones to play with and after playing with one for a while I thought it was too amazing to pass on, so I bought it. So far i have no complaints except internet speed and that is fine a lot of the time.
